The Comprehensive Edit

A “deep” edit and critique, focusing on clarity, organization, word choice, sentence construction and structure, style, format, narrative arc (if applicable), structure, and more. Comes with an extensive editorial letter in addition to the line-edits. Also includes proofreading.

 

The Structural Edit

This specialty edit deals with the structure of your book or project, with special attention paid to narrative arc and flow (if applicable), logical organization, and clarity. Extensive editorial letter included.

 

The Rewrite

Need something rebuilt from the studs up? This service offers an extreme makeover for a manuscript suffering from significant structural and stylistic problems. Based on your earlier drafts, an outline, and any research completed (if applicable), I can thoroughly revise and rebuild your manuscript. Please note: this edit is not for everyone: entire sentences may be rewritten, chapters rearranged, and dialogue reworked. The Rewrite is the edit that is most similar to the way I edited books when I was working for Penguin. For this reason, it is best for a writer whose ego is not tied up with his or her own words but whose main objective is to publish.

 

The Copyedit

Copyediting services are available for all kinds of manuscripts. I copyedit according to Chicago Manual of Style, the predominant copyedit style in trade publishing. Proofing services are also available.

 

Book Proposal Boot Camp

A service for the nonfiction writer who is ready to begin pitching agents or editors. If, after a review of the partial manuscript, I determine that the project is a viable one, we will work together to create a pitch letter, a proposal, and three sample chapters. This service is best done in conjunction with one of the edits above.

Private Tutoring

One-on-one sessions available for students of any age, from high school students to Master’s candidates. Areas covered include grammar, essay-writing, vocabulary, fiction and nonfiction exercises, creative writing, etc.

 

Wedding Vows, Toasts, and Other Personal Documents

Few things are more daunting than writing your own vows, coming up with a toast for your best friend, or writing a difficult letter. I can offer a personalized service that includes an half-hour interview (in person or on the phone) that will enable me to turn your own words into a work of literature that sounds just like you. Note for vows and toasts: please contact me as far in advance of the wedding as possible. Because these are such important words, it’s crucial to leave ample time for revisions and back and forth discussions.

 

 College Applications, Essays, and Theses

Consisting of a thorough line-edit and a proofread, this service provides the high school junir or senior, undergraduate,  Master’s, or Ph.D. student with an eagle-eyed edit of important material.

 

Prices

 

I charge $50 an hour. Totals for projects will vary due to page count, complexity of material, and level and quality of writing. I will provide a free estimate based on a short sample of your writing, your stated goals, and the edit you desire. If we decide to move forward, one half of the estimate will be due up front (only applicable for jobs estimated at more than $500). The balance remaining will be due upon your receipt of the edited material. Add 25% for a rush job.

 

While an estimate will be provided before work begins, the following is a rough guideline of my editing speed.

 

*Proofreading: 12-15 pages per hour

 

*Structural Edit: 10-12 pages per hour

 

*Comprehensive edit: 8-10 pages per hour

 

*Rewrite: priced at a flat fee, depending on length. Minimum of $1000.
